As with any new craft, if you haven’t tried scrapbooking before, the first time you are faced with a blank page it is rather difficult to know where to start.

We thought, for the first Guilded article on scrapbooking we would keep it simple and help to allay some of the ‘fears’ of the blank page and piles of photographs! Over the coming issues we’ll introduce ideas for those who are more experienced in this field.

altered art 1

Altered Art is fun to do as you can really let your creative juices flow! Almost anything can be ‘altered’ and here we have used a plain paint palette as the base. A simple food tin, cleaned out of course, is decorated up to be used as a beautiful pot for your brushes. The stamps used echo the painting aspect on both pieces and they would make an unusual gift for an arty friend!

The stamps used are all unmounted. They come in A6 plate form and can either be cut up and used with a glue stick and an acrylic block or they can be use with EZ Mount, then cut up and used with an acrylic block.

This is a great card for all sorts of occasions – from a gent’s card to a coming of age card. It’s also a good way of trying the Krafty Lady Art Moulds, if you haven’t used them before. They are so easy to use and work well with anything mouldable, kneadable or pourable. Here we are using Friendly Plastic.

folded cards 1

Fed up with the standard shape of card? Try some of these simple shapes for a change – they can all be made from half an A4 sheet of card. All you need to do is make a few cuts and folds, and you have a variety of different shapes. Some useful tools for folding include a score board which has various different score lines marked, and a bone folder for making sharp creases.

Cutting can be done either with scissors, or for more accurate cutting use a metal ruler and a sharp knife. The decorative papers used are a new range from K and Co, 6 x 6 pads, and 36 sheets each of Designer Paper. The range comes in 6 different colourways and the ones used here are Sparkly Sweet, Classic Mckenna and Classic Bailey.

Using an ultra thick embossing technique creates a wonderful deep de-bossed image when you stamp into it. These panels can then be used to decorate all kinds of projects from box lids and pictures to greeting cards, as we have done here.

The technique involves building up layers of embossing powder by adding one layer and heating it, then adding a second layer of powder and heating again. You can build up several layers and the more layers you wish to use, the thicker the card will need to be. For some fairly thick panels you can use pieces of mount board as this won’t buckle under the weight and heat. Having built up the layers you need to press your rubber stamp into the final molten layer of embossing powder. This won’t damage your stamp at all!

Have a play!
