altered art 1

Altered Art is fun to do as you can really let your creative juices flow! Almost anything can be ‘altered’ and here we have used a plain paint palette as the base. A simple food tin, cleaned out of course, is decorated up to be used as a beautiful pot for your brushes. The stamps used echo the painting aspect on both pieces and they would make an unusual gift for an arty friend!

The stamps used are all unmounted. They come in A6 plate form and can either be cut up and used with a glue stick and an acrylic block or they can be use with EZ Mount, then cut up and used with an acrylic block.

Tools needed:

Step by Step:

  1. Paint the palette with white gesso and set aside to dry.
  2. When dry rub swirls of the three colours of Paint Dabber around the outside edge of the palette. Use a baby wipe to mix and blend the colours together.
  3. Print outthe large ART letters, from the My Download section, onto a piece of cream or white card.  Rub one Dabber colour over each letter in streaks leaving areas of the card uncovered. Dry the paint with a heat tool.
  4. Rub the Caramel Adirondack ink pad across the letters. The ink will colour the areas of blank card but won’t dry on the paint streaks. Use a baby wipe to wipe away the ink from the paint streaks.
  5. Stamp the text image randomly across the letters using the Terracotta ink pad and then cut out the letters.
  6. Randomly stamp the large butterfly across each letter using the Stream ink pad followed by the flower using the Terracotta ink pad.

  7. Edge each letter with a little Stream ink and then glue the letters across the palette overlapping each other slightly.

  8. Stamp the Paint Brush/Craft Knife image around the bottom of the palette using a black Memories ink pad. Colour the images a little with the Dabber paints. You can take the dabbers off and use a water brush or paintbrush.
  9. Lay a piece of sequin waste around the palette and sponge through it with the orange dabber paint.
  10. Take a smaller size of sequin waste and place that randomly across the palette. This time instead of using paint to sponge through it use one of the baby wipes you have used to spread the paint around and rub this across the sequin waste. You will see you get a much lighter pattern appearing. The baby wipe will also pick up some of the paint already on the palette and spread that around a little as well giving a blended effect.
  11. Randomly stamp the small speckles image in black across the palette.

Tools needed:

Step by Step:

  1. Wash out the tin and make sure it is dry. There is no need to remove the label as it is going to be covered. Take a pair of pliers and squeeze over the lip on the inside of the tin where the lid sat as it is quite sharp and safer turned over!
  2. Cut a strip of paper to fit around the tin. Colour the paper with a mix of the three Dabber colours, applying streaks of each colour and blending them with a baby wipe.
  3. Stamp the Art quote across the paper in strips to cover it. Glue the strip around the can.
  4. Print out the small ART letters, from the My Download Section, onto a piece of cream or white card. Rub the green Dabber colour over each letter in streaks leaving areas of the card uncovered. Dry the paint with a heat tool.
  5. Rub the Caramel Adirondack ink pad across the letters, the ink will colour the areas of blank card but won’t dry on the paint streaks. Use a baby wipe to wipe away the ink from the paint streaks.
  6. Stamp the text image randomly across the letters using the Terracotta ink pad and then cut the letters out.
  7. Randomly stamp the small butterfly with the Stream ink pad and the flower with the Terracotta ink pad across the letters.
  8. Mount each letter onto black card and cut out again to give a very thin border. This helps the letters stand out against the background.
  9. Glue the letters around the can making sure one of them sits over the join in the paper to hide it.

  10. On a scrap of coloured card stamp the pot with brushes image three times. Add some extra colour, cut them out and glue one between each letter.

Note: The small letters are sized to fit onto a standard baked beans/tinned tomatoes can. Adjust the size if you are using a tin of a different size!
