Time Flies 1

How many times do you hear yourself say that you don’t know where the time has gone? Particularly when you look in the mirror!

Well, I thought it was time to laugh back with this fun filled famed mirror. Now when you check your make up you’ll really be able to see that time flies!

This project combines a number of techniques – stamping, embossing, using Krafty Lady Art Moulds and Friendly Plastic and Grungeboard. The overall effect we are trying to achieve is a somewhat distressed look, so don’t worry if things don’t turn out perfect! Just ignore the clock for once and let your imagination have a play!

We used:

Step by Step:

Time Flies 2

The first thing to do is to colour the wooden frame of the mirror. We used one from Ikea and it has quite a wide surround, giving you plenty of room to play! Start by masking off the mirror with tape. Use the Tea Dye Distress ink pad direct from the pad and apply the colour to the frame.

It is easier if you apply the ink following the grain of the wood. Once you have applied this colour, move on to the Vintage Photo pad and add this on top. Then apply Walnut Stain and finally highlight with the Black Soot ink pad.

  1. While this is drying you can make the letters using the Art Moulds and the Friendly Plastic. Have a bowl of cold water to hand. Cut a piece of the Friendly Plastic to fit the Art Mould and place it coloured side down on the mould. Use a heat tool to soften the plastic.

When it is ready, it will ‘sag’ into the mould. Quickly dip your fingers into some cold water, then press the plastic into the mould. It is very important that you wet your fingers first as the plastic will be very hot and could burn your fingers otherwise. Then drop the mould, with the Friendly Plastic in it, into the bowl of cold water. This will harden the plastic.
  2. Time Flies 3

  3. Take the piece out of the mould and use scissors to trim off any unwanted plastic.
  4. Time Flies 4

  5. Repeat this with all four Art Moulds to spell out the word TIME. Use the creamy Rub Ons to soften the harshness of the gold colour.
  6. Time Flies 5

  7. Apply the copper Paint Dabber to the central letter area on each moulded piece.
  8. Pop out a few of the flourishes from the Grungeboard and apply the Walnut Stain Distress ink pad to each piece. Once dry, use the copper Paint Dabber to add highlights here and there. When this is dry, attach them to the frame using a strong glue, placing them top right and lower left of the frame.
  9. Next pop out the small pair of wings from the sheet of Grungeboard and apply the inks as for the flourishes.
  10. While this is drying, ink up the Fob Watch stamp with black pigment ink and stamp it onto some hammered card. Emboss this with clear embossing powder, then cut it out. Use a sponge to apply ink from the Vintage Photo ink pad and also the Walnut Stain pad.
  11. Now to put it all together.

  12. Time Flies 6

  13. Attach the wings to the top left of the frame and add the cut out Watch on top.

    Time Flies 6

Use a hot glue gun to attach the Friendly Plastic letters on top of the flourish in the top right hand corner. Make sure you spell out the word T I M E.
  14. Stamp a few numbers around about using the black ink pad. You can soften the colour, once dry, by sponging a little of the Walnut Stain ink over the top.

  15. Time Flies 7

  16. All that remains now is to glue in place some of the watch parts, to tie together the various time elements.

So now when you look in the mirror you can smile as time flies by!

These mirrors can be themed for pretty much any occasion and they are sure to please whoever you make one for. ssp
