Acetate is often used as an overlay for an opaque backing when making a card, but you can just as easily use it for the main focus of the piece. A folded piece of acetate gives you two surfaces to play with, adding depth and dimension to your project – and you get a different look when you open out the card! You have to be a bit careful with the reverse of your designs, remember that it will show through, so it’s best to use glue that dries clear to fix embellishments on with. I’ve used Pritt Stick and double-sided sticky tape for gluing card on. You can also Spray Mount, but you will need the permanent kind, rather than repositionable.
Embossing with a heat gun is perfectly possible, but you must ensure first that you have heat proof acetate, the kind that would go through a laser printer, or you’ll end up with a shrivelled mess – although I have been known to use these as focal points for various other pieces of art! (I never throw anything away!) Dye ink won’t adhere to the surface very well, so you can either stamp on paper and then stick that on, or stamp with paint – in fact Paint Dabbers are very useful here as you can use them straight on the acetate. Here’s a list of what we used for each card: For the Butterfly Kisses card: For the Daisy Mask card: For the Love is All You Need card: Butterfly Kisses Step by Step:
- Fold an A5 piece of heatproof acetate in half lengthwise to form the card base.
 - Tear some pieces of backing paper, stamp with the Butterfly in Victorian Violet and stick on the inside of the card. Trim off the excess.
 - Dab the inside of the card with Pink Sherbet paint going over the edges of the torn papers.
 - Stamp the Flower over this, using the same ink as before.
 - Add some torn pieces of paper to the front of the card. Add paint, as before, beginning with the Eggplant. When dry add some Pink Sherbet.
- Stamp over the paper and the dried paint with the Flourish Border in Victorian Violet. Stamp some of the flowers using the Eggplant and Pink Sherbet paints.
 - Stamp two strips of backing paper with Butterfly Kisses in black ink and stick on to the front and trim off the excess.
 - Add some of the paint to two butterfly embellishments and add to the card.
Daisy Mask Step by Step:
- Fold the acetate lengthwise to make a tall card and crease with a bone folder.
- Place the mask/stencil at the top, slightly overlapping the edges, and dab with the Alcohol ink. When dry, move the mask lower down the card and repeat.
 - Stamp the Swirls on to backing paper with black ink, tear into strips and gold emboss the edges. Stick on to the card as shown.
 - Stamp the Swirls on to a script panel, using grey ink, tear the edges and stick inside the card.
Love Is All You Need Step by Step: - Stamp the mulberry paper with the Flourishes image using the embossing pad and gold emboss. Tear a strip and stick on to the front of the acetate.
- Stamp the flowers with the Text stamp, using black ink. Dab with Wild Plum Alcohol Ink and add a little gold rub-on with your finger.
- Add two collage images using sticky foam pads. Arrange the flowers and then fix to the acetate with gold brads.
 - Add a line of Purple Twilight and Pink Sherbet paint along the inside of the card and stick a strip of patterned paper over the top.
